Full Bio
Philip is a quantum visionary, bridging the worlds of advanced physics and global finance. He envisions a future where quantum technologies transform our approach to security, computation, and problem-solving across industries. As an unshakeable optimist, he believes in humanity's ability to harness the most complex scientific principles to create practical solutions that benefit society.
A trained quantum physicist with a PhD from Cambridge University, Philip is fascinated by the intersection of theoretical science and real-world applications. As Group Head of Quantum Technologies at HSBC, he leads one of the most recognised quantum teams in finance, recently ranked #2 in the industry.
Philip may be best known for his pioneering work in quantum security where he showed the world’s first demonstration of telecom fibre-based QKD using single photons from a quantum dot. More recently he led HSBC to become the first bank to join BT and Toshiba's quantum-secured metro network. Under his guidance, the bank demonstrated the world's first foreign exchange trade on a commercial quantum key distribution network, connecting their London headquarters to data centers through quantum encryption.
His unconventional journey from quantum physics research to banking has attracted international attention. Recently appointed as a Quantum Adviser to the UK Government, Philip supports the nation's ambition to become a leading quantum enabled economy by 2033. He also serves as Board Observer for Classiq, a leading quantum computing software company.
Philip is known for making quantum concepts accessible and relevant. From boardrooms to academic forums, his engaging talks simplify complex ideas - earning him features on high-profile podcasts and Bloomberg’s The Future with Hannah Fry, an episode that has attracted over 10 million views.
As a community builder, he’s united quantum entrepreneurs, engineers, and investors to turn research into real-world solutions. His mantra, “Quantum-safe is not optional, it’s inevitable,” resonates in global cybersecurity circles. Philip’s work bridges the gap between theory and application, helping industries prepare for a quantum future.
